Prompt: "Red suits you"

“What’s Marinette wearing?”

Nino looked from his somewhat dumbstruck best friend over to Marinette, who stood a short distance away with Alya and the other girls. He was surprised to see her wearing red—she’d always been a pink sort of person. But even so, it was just a red shirt. He turned back to Adrien. “What’s wrong with it?”

“It’s red,” Adrien said.

“And…?”

But Adrien refused to explain, and spent the rest of the morning shooting Marinette unreadable glances.

“She’s wearing red,” Adrien said to Nathanael at lunch.

“So what? It looks good on her.”

“Ah-ha!”

Nathanael jumped at his sudden outburst. “What?

Adrien hummed to himself, lifted his clasped hands to his mouth as if he’d figured a problem out, then patted Nathanael on the shoulder and walked away. Nathanael watched him go with the sense that something stupid had just transpired.

By the end of the day, the entire class had observed and hypothesized the following: Adrien had finally realized Marinette was attractive and no longer knew what to do with himself. A group text went out to everyone but the oblivious pair. A plan was formulated. And when the final bell rang, the plan was put into action.

Marinette collected her things and approached the door, only to find it blocked off by her loitering classmates. She craned her neck for a way through. None. She sighed. If she’d been Ladybug, she could have taken a running leap over all of their heads.

“Marinette?”

She whirled around. Adrien. “Oh, uh, afternoon good—I mean, good Adrien—I mean—”

“You’re wearing red.” Adrien fiddled with the strap of his messenger bag.

“Yeah! I, uh, forgot to do laundry yesterday? So I pulled out this old t-shirt hoping it’d still fit me and, uh, it did.” A riveting story, she thought.

Adrien wasn’t quite looking at her, and when he did catch her gaze, he quickly looked at something else. “Red suits you,” he said.

Marinette’s mouth fell open. “Oh.” A blush stained her cheeks. “Thanks.”

“Don’t mention it,” Adrien replied, then frowned a curious frown, then walked past her without so much as a goodbye.

Marinette turned to give him a fumbling warning about the student blockade, only to discover that their classmates had scattered.
